I said yesterday that I would talk about how I support the detoxification system. I start during the preparation phase, which I am in right now. For me personally, the preparation phase is how I ease my body into the more intense phases of the fast. If you don’t prepare your body to fast, you could end up getting sick. I start doing the prep phase one week before the start date of the fast.

For me, the preparation phase is basically what I posted yesterday as my version of the Daniel fast, but I may add legumes, or corn, or even a sprinkling of cheese into a salad. I also start to wean myself from caffine during the prep phase and begin to increase my water intake. I add supplements at this point to help suport the detox process. They are:

1. Drink about 100 oz. of water per day. Why? To support liver function. the liver is the filter for the body. When you don’t intake enough water, your liver doesn’t function at it’s highest capacity.

2. To my first cup of water (20 oz) I mix 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar and the juice of one whole lemon. This combination has antiseptic qualities and really helps clean your digestive system. It can be harsh on the stomach, so I always make sure have a banana or a smoothie first.

3. In my next cup of water I mix in I tablespoon of liquid chlorophyll with mint flavoring. This is another form of disinfectant for the body. You can take chlorophyll in a pill, but I don’t like pills. I try to do both the chlorophyll and the apple cider combo before noon because in the morining your body is in the elmination phase, getting rid of yesterday’s waste.

4. In the afternoon, around 2 PM (when I would normally have another 2 cups of coffee) I take 2 tablespoons of a liquid multi-vitamin complete B complex. You talk about taste BAD! But it gives you a lot of energy. Again, you could take this in pill form, but some studies show that liquids are assimilated more quickly into the body, and since I hate pills, this works for me.

5. I also take flax seed oil at the time I take the B vitamins.

So right now, during this prep phase, this is what I’m doing. I hope this helps everyone. Tomorrow I will be addressing the comment by an anonymous poster about fasting when you are prone to obsess about weight.

Love all of you!
Kerri

Pastor Kerri, this is awesome! Truly it is so helpful to know specifically what a “seasoned faster” does and helps us learn the principals and practicals of an extended fast like this. Thank you so much for thinking of us and being so transparent with us. Love you so much!

Pastor Kerri, I truly love how detailed you are being regarding this fast..I planned on doing it and was feeling a little skeptic that I could maintain it, but my desire to do it outweighs my fear…but you are now putting so many of those fears to rest! You are wonderful! Thank you!!

    Kerri:
Well; your wisdom is at work again in laying this plan out for us and making it easier; and for answering all of our questions.

What is your insight on carrying this cleanse into the fast; and for how long would it be safe to clease?
I think I remeber decafe being on the plan…..so can I still have my decafe coffe throughout the fast?

Thank you for sacrificing your time and energy to relay to us any new information that might be helpful to make this a little easier on our flesh.

This fast should bring us all closer to God and each other.
I can’t wait to see what the Lord will do in my life and hear the testamonies of everyone.
    love much xoxo

    Pastor Kerri,

I want to do the fasting not only the right way, but I can not wait for God to take hold of me while I show him my willingness to let go and allow him to do his work with me.

Reading that you began a preparation a week prior, I want to do the same. My question is if I begin preparing this weekend for the 1 week like yourself and then after that week begin fasting…….is okay to start my fasting a little late? I guess I’m looking for reassurence more than anything. And of course any comments or suggestions are so welcomed.

    Continue Blessings to you,
    Charity Shobe

Kerri, thanks so much for all your food information about the ‘fast’ coming up. “Truvia” is a new sweetner, derived from the Stevia plant, which I think tastes better than the Stevia. It’s more ‘sugar’ tasting without the aftertaste of Stevia if you’re trying to eliminate sugar from your diet. Also, I noticed in your outline of foods you can eat, soy protein was listed. Since there’s to be no dairy, is whey protein a ‘forbidden’ protein? I’ve read alot about soy products, and the jury is still out on this one, but I’ve chosen to stay away from soy products if possible. What do you think? Also, I have a friend from the wintery north that’s interested in coming to the Annual Shine this spring. Do you have a date I can share with her so she can make traveling arrangements? Part of my prayer and fasting involves her and her family.

Thanks again for all you do for Celebration chicks!

Charity — Sure you can start your fasting a little late. Or you can just do a shorter prep phase. The prep phase just makes it easier to ease into detoxing than going cold turkey into a fast. In your case I would recommend doing a shorter prep phase. You just might get a few more headaches and detox aches. No big deal though. Go well!

Sandy –You are right. Soy protein has come under some scrutiny lately as to its possible links to breast cancer and hormonal irregularity. I don’t usually use soy products, but for this short time, since I am not a high risk for possible related issues, I use it because I find it easier to digest. Stovall uses whey protein. Use whey if you have concerns about soy. SHINE is May 14-16th. I really hope your friend will be able to make it!

    Kerri,

Thank you so much for posting some guidelines regarding fasting. I have fasted for years, long fasts lasting up to 40 days, as well as short, water only fasts. I have also found it very important to prepare not only spiritually (weeks before) but physically. About a month prior to a fast I began asking God how and what I’m supposed to fast, and believe it or not an answer always comes. This 21 days will be very different for me. You see, I also have very serious food allergies, which limit my eating considerably. Therefore, the Daniel Fast is pretty easy, although it seriously limits my already limited diet. This go around I have dusted off my juicer and will be alternating juicing and the Daniel Fast.

I’ve learned that juicing allows the body to absorb 95% of the vitamin value of the fruit or vegetable. The only warning is not to juice the same fruit or vegetable too often because the body can build up its own “allergy” through too much absorption.

    Anyway, just a few thoughts.

Do you have any recommendations for nursing moms who want to fast?

  9. Libby Mahoney says: January 12, 2009 • 17:56:19

Hi, I’m nursing my newborn and I am participating in the fast. I fasted last year and I enjoyed it so much that I didn’t want to miss out on it this year so I did some research. Basically when nursing we need to make sure we eat enough protein and dairy and also drink lots of water. I’ve altered the daniel fast so I can get what I need for the baby and still fast. I am including the legumes, grains, and nuts which are good for protein. I am also doing some dairy products, like, yogurt, milk, cheddar cheese, and eggs. I’m not eating any meat and I’ve made a list of my favorite foods that contain dairy and I have eliminated those from my diet…like, ice cream, american cheese, queso dip, etc. I’ll also be doing the juice water days but I will make my smoothies with whole milk and I’ll have yogurt, too. I want to make sure that I am eating just for nutrients for the baby. I’m also supplementing with formula, especially since I just started back to work and I want to make sure she is getting everything she needs. I just want to keep my diet as basic and natural as I can. I hope that helps.
    :-)

  10. FASTING: Ease into it says: January 5, 2010 • 12:32:04

[...] This week I am not officially fasting, but I am preparing my body for it. It’s really difficult to go straight from holiday eating into a fast, so I find it helpful to take a week to transition. This week (January 4-10), I am eliminating all meat, white grains, and refined sugars from my diet. I am also cutting back on dairy (I might have a little cheese in a salad) and caffeine (I will still have cream in my coffee). I will eliminate all processed food from my diet as well. This is the week I begin taking any supplements to support detox (How I Fast Part 2: Supporting the detox process). [...]
